Frequently Asked Questions

Why is MD5 included if it's insecure?
MD5 is no longer considered cryptographically secure, but it's still widely used for basic file-integrity checksums, so it's included for compatibility.
Is my file uploaded to compute the hash?
No, hashing runs entirely in your browser; the file never leaves your device.
Can I hash plain text instead of a file?
Yes, you can paste or type text directly and the tool hashes it instantly with all four algorithms, no need to save it as a file first.
Are the MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 hashes all computed from the same input?
Yes, all four algorithms run over the exact same file or text in one pass, so you can copy whichever one the other party expects without re-uploading anything.
Why is MD5 computed differently from the other three hashes?
The browser's native Web Crypto API doesn't implement MD5 since it's considered cryptographically broken, so this tool uses a standalone JavaScript implementation following the original RFC 1321 spec — SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512, by contrast, run on the browser's native, hardware-accelerated Web Crypto function.
